COACHING/PRACTICE DRILLS
COACHING/PRACTICE DRILLS

Have a 1 second gap between players
passes are made to two players as they come around the cones
After the two skaters pass the opposite line, the first player in that line skates backwards and receives a pass from the 2nd player in line, goes up ice, and takes a shot on goal

First player in line skates to red line and makes pass to first player at opposite blue line
Loops and gets a return pass and skates back towards red line and passes to player in his original line
He receives a return pass and skates in on goal and takes a shot
This drill can be run from both sides of the rink

Form 2 lines in neutral zone
Coach dumps puck into to either side of net
2 players battle to gain possession of the puck
Player to gain possession skates behind the net and carries puck to opposite blueline without losing possession
If defensive player gains possession they will skate behind their net and carry puck to opposite blueline without losing possession

F1 starts drill by passing D and then looping to far boards
F2 receives pass from D and returns pass back
D passes to wall to F1
F1 drives hard outside and either passes to F2 or shoots to far pad
F2 drives hard to net looking for pass or rebound
D follows play and moves into point position to maintain good habits

Drill is designed to have players work on passing while skating hard around the cones and finish with a 2 on 0 shot
Players split into two corners with pucks in one corner.
First player from each line skate on whistle passing puck back and forth as often as possible during first cycle through cones
Skaters will cycle a second time through cones breaking in on net 2 on 0 and taking a shot
Next two players in line will start as group 1 breaks in on goal

Form 2 equal lines in each corner
First player in each line(F1 & F2) skates to top of circle with F1 carrying a puck
F1 passes to F2 at top of circle
F2 then passes to first player in line 1
Line 1 then passes cross-ice to F1
F1 & F2 then loop through neutral zone and break in 2 x 0 vs goaltender

3 Skaters run this drill at one time with all 3 attempting a shot on goal
F1 Skates top of circle and takes shot on goal
F2 Skates full circle without a puck
F3 Skates an inside/out pattern around face-off dot with puck, breaks on goal, and takes a shot
F1 picks up puck below far circle, matches timing of F2 through the neutral zone, and dishes pass to F2
F2 breaks in on goal with a shot while F1 crashes net for rebound

F1 dumps puck in low from neutral zone
D1 retrieves puck and makes quick D2D pass to D2
D2 receives pass and turns up ice looking for breakout pass to F1 in the slot
F2 times his skate and receives pass from F1 in neutral zone
F2 can either now dump the puck and become the new F1 or F1 and F2 can break in 2 x 1 or 2 x 2

D starts at top of circle and skates backwards around circle
At bottom of circle D transitions to forward skating and continues forward back to the top of circle
While performing this drill D will pass back and forth with Coach/player, who is positioned at the top of the circle
Each D will complete two rotations around circle

Defenseman starts at point, receives pass from Coach/player at bottom of circle, gains center ice as quickly as possible and takes shot from top of slot
D skates around cones while always facing the net to promote forward to backward pivot
D receives second pass while skating backward towards the point and takes 2nd shot on goal from top of slot
Again, D skates around cones pivoting from forward to backward and receives pass, does a give-and-go with D partner and takes 3rd shot

Coach dumps puck into corner
D skates backwards from slot and transitions forward to collect the puck in the corner. Have D "surround" the puck before retrieving
D skates hard to far side of net, using back of net as obstacle to prevent forechecking and to protect puck
D makes breakout pass to coach or teammate

Coach or teammate dumps puck into zone either high off the glass or along the ice
D1 retrieves puck while D2 skates to good support position
D2D pass and D2 starts moving up ice for breakout
D2 makes breakout pass to next D in line and skates hard to back of line as if jumping into the play
D1 becomes new D2 and next D in line becomes new D1
Drill should be performed from both sides of the ice

You will want to set up cones, tires, extra sticks, etc throughout the ice to serve as defenders
Form 2 lines in high slot above face-off circles
Coach dumps puck into corner
Player 1 skates to corner to retrieve puck
Player 2 follows Player 1. Player 1 redirects pass off boards to Player 2 who is trailing
Player 1 skates the top of circle, awaits return pass from Player 2, and heads to net for shot on goal
After making return pass to Player 1, Player 2 will follow the shot and look for a rebound
